Difference Between Fruit and Vegetable (With Table)

If one is to roam across the entire earth and take note of the food habits of many people belonging to different countries and cultures, he shall notice certain things that are found in almost all the places. These things are dairy products, animal products, and plant products. While an average person can easily distinguish between these things, it sometimes becomes difficult when technicalities arise. 

Two of such things are Fruits and Vegetables. While both of these can be noticed all around the world, included in the food habits and practices of many people, they are technically very different from one another.

Fruit vs Vegetable 

The difference between Fruit and Vegetable is that the former refers to that part of a plant that is the mature ovary, while on the contrary, the latter refers to any part of the plant which can be eaten. However, this is not the only difference, and there lie a number of other differences distinguishing these in terms of their definition, botanic structure, and uses, etc. 

Looking at their biological definition and characteristics, a Fruit is basically a plant’s part whose purpose is to distribute its seeds in the nearest locations. Unless a human being picks it up, it is eaten by any animal or bird normally. After they eat it, the seeds are dropped at farther places to give life to more plants. Fruit is usually sweet and delicious in taste and is eaten in its raw form mostly. 

While on the contrary, vegetables can be any possible part of a plant that can be eaten. These are used as edible things, and humans eat these in different manners. In the normal course, stems, roots, leaves, flowers, etc., are the parts of a plant that are classified as vegetables. If looked at by the perspective of science, vegetable does not have any universally accepted definition, and it sometimes varies as per the places and traditions.

What is Fruit? 

A fruit, as commonly defined by science and biology, is a specific part of a plant that contains seeds and is responsible for further reproduction in the plant. This may range from small size to a large size and can be found in a variety of colors and tastes all across the world.  

Ovary of the plant is matured by the time and grows into a delicious and very healthy thing called fruit. It is either consumed by certain animals or birds and when it happens, the seeds get distributed to very farther locations, allowing the growth of more plants. This is one way of distributing seeds. Another is by picking up these fruits and intentionally planting the seeds at certain locations to generate more fruit-giving plants.  

These are commercially sold all across the world at a very huge level, and people love to eat them for them being very delicious and healthy. Usually, it is noticed that fruits have a sweet taste, but certain fruit can be bitter too.  

Looking at the nutritional value they offer, mostly fiber and vitamin C is obtained after consuming these fruits; however, certain fruit can be responsible for providing other vitamins too. Some examples may be apple, orange, plum, and watermelon, etc.  

What is Vegetable? 

A Vegetable is relatively tough to define as it is nowhere given any official and well-accepted definition of its own. To develop an understanding, it can be explained as any part of a plant that we can eat. It can be the root of the plant, the stem of the plant, or the leaves as well.  

In most places, people prefer to eat a vegetable after cooking it. However, these days salads have become quite popular, and people have begun to eat vegetables in their raw form too. But this is just the rare part, and for the most common part, boiled, cooked, or fried vegetables prevail in all areas. 

Unlike a fruit, this does not contain any seed and is mostly made up of the flesh part. Most vegetables carry a savory flavor, but some happen to be neutral in taste and are accompanied by spices to bring out a flavor. 

China and India are the two countries that lead the production of vegetables. The most common vegetables include the following parts of a plant- 

  • The stem, 
  • The root, 
  • The leaves, 
  • The upper side of the flower, etc. 

Main Differences Between Fruit and Vegetable 

  1. As per biology, a fruit is any part of the plant that carries seeds in it and happens to be a matured ovary. A vegetable does not have any biological definition but can be explained as any part of a plant that can be eaten. 
  2. A fruit happens to be the matured ovary of the plant, while on the contrary, a Vegetable happens to be any edible part. 
  3. Fruit is mostly eaten in raw and original form, while people prefer to cook vegetables before eating it. 
  4. A fruit undoubtedly contains a certain number of seeds in it, while a vegetable does not contain any seed as such. 
  5. Certain examples of fruit are apple, orange, plum, watermelon, mango, etc. But on the contrary, potatoes, tomatoes, cucumber, and others are examples of vegetables. 

Conclusion  

There is hardly any part of the world where fruits and vegetables are not included in the meal. However, people tend to consume them in different ways depending on the traditional cultures and the utilization. Fruit is usually consumed in its raw form after getting washed and cleaned off any impurity, but as far as a vegetable is concerned, in most cases, a vegetable is consumed after being cooked very well. 

However, salads are the exception to this common practice of eating vegetables after cooking them, so it can be said that knowing the differences between these two is very crucial for any aware person today.
