Breeze is frequently referred to as the moderate- cold wind that goes in the surrounding. Breezes are the outcome of difference in the atmospheric temperatures.
Breeze is a brisk wind, but that’s not the end. There are different types of breeze based on their origin. Land and sea breezes are the two major types of breeze we experience frequently.
Land Breeze vs Sea Breeze
The difference between a land breeze and sea breeze Land breezes occur during the winters and Sea breezes happen to occur during the summers or spring season. Both the type of breezes is experienced only near the coastline throughout the year.
A sea breeze or onshore breeze is something we may experience during the daytime or somewhere near a large water body. A land breeze is more likely to be experienced during the night. The reason why this phenomenon happens in both cases is due to the difference in the temperature, pressure, and the speed at which the air blows.
The sun is the real dynamo that makes this phenomenon emerges both on the land and the sea. Sea is much colder than the land and that’s the reason why the sun first hits the land and toast it entirely which makes air over the land rise and the air over the sea sink. This rising and sinking of air then create a cycle of blowing cool air from the sea to the land. This is how people feel the cool breeze when they are near to the sea lines.

What is Sea Breeze?
This is a type of breeze that blows from the sea or ocean and flows towards the land. Sea breezes are prominent during the daytime throughout the year and become stronger in the summer or spring season because the sun during summer heats up the land quickly than the seawater. This is the reason why people spend most of the summer leisure times on the beach or coastal areas so that they can enjoy the sea breeze without feeling hot or burnt at the same time.
During hot summer days, lands tend to be hotter than the water and the temperature difference between them is observed to be around 80°F(Land) and 65°F (Sea).
Early morning temperatures between the land and the sea are nearly the same, but as soon as the sun rises and gets brighter, temperature changes. The land absorbs a higher amount of the sun’s energy than the sea. This air will blow throughout the time until the sunsets. The air has low pressure at the land and has high pressure above the seawater.
In order to compensate for the flow of wind, the air will blow from high pressure to low pressure which causes sea breezes. These sea breezes are not always strong or always weak. It highly depends on the temperatures between the land and the sea.
What is Land Breeze?
A land breeze is the breeze that blows from land and reaches towards the sea or any water body or in other words, the cold wind that blows offshore on calm, clear evenings is known as land breeze. Land breeze can be observed throughout the year but they are dominant during the winter season when the temperature of the water is pretty much warm and the nights are extremely cold.
Temperatures of land and sea during the fall season might range up to 13℃(Land) and 18℃(Sea).
Since, the land is colder during such seasons, it quickly gives off heat back in the space resulting in rapid cooling. In the evening the land cools off easily as compared to the sea because there are differences in heat potential. During night or winters the cycle reverses.
The land has high surface pressure whereas the sea has low surface pressure because during winters the sea retains sun’s heat more than the land. To bring it to equilibrium, air will blow from high surface pressure to low surface pressure which causes land breeze
Main Differences Between Land Breeze and Sea Breeze
- Temperature: Sea breeze shows change in air temperature whereas land breeze does not show any change in temperatures.
- Speed of air: Land breeze flows slower at about 5-8 knots and Sea breeze blows at a faster rate 10-20knots.
- Occurrence: Land breeze is prominent during winters and the sea breeze is prominent during spring or summers.
- Surface Pressure: In the case of land breeze, land air rises and flows towards the sea causing low pressure, however, in the case of sea breeze water air sinks causing it to have high pressure.
- Circulation: For land breeze, the wind blows from the land and flows towards the ocean and air flows from the ocean towards the land in case of the sea breeze.
Both land and sea breeze are observed near a water body or a coastline. In conclusion, the air around the land breeze is much slower than the sea breeze. The sea breeze is notable in summers and the land breeze in winters.
The land breeze blows dry air whereas sea breeze wind contains moisture particles that make the air heavier around the sea. Convection is the process that helps heat transfer between water and air. Convection usually comes up near the waterfront that causes the land breeze to flow in the night and sea breeze to blow during the daytime.
