Difference Between Monocots and Dicots (With Table)

Monocots vs Dicots

The difference between Monocots and Dicots is that in dicots, the seeds of the plants contain a single cotyledon, whereas, in dicots, the seeds of the plants contain double cotyledon. The flowers and petals part in monocots is divided only into three categories, whereas the flowers and petal parts in the dicots are divided into five categories. 

In Monocots, the seeds usually have a single cotyledon. This can be found with the help of their name, as the name itself sounds like mono. Monocots have lost their potential and the strength to produce woods. So they don’t fall under the category of wood-producing plants. You can find the veins of the monocots to be netted veins. You can find the bark to be periderm. But it is not the case in all the monocots. 

Dicots plants have two cotyledons. It can be found in the name as well, as the name itself suggests di, which means two. All the plant species that come under dicots will have double cotyledon. The dicot pairs that is their embryo will have those two cotyledons. Common flowering species come under the category of dicotyledons. They come in multiple, so they are named as dicots.

What are Monocots?

Plants that provide flowers are simply called Monocots. There are about 60,000 monocot species in this world. Usually, monocots have a single cotyledon. It is a topic that comes under biology. Students who wish to study further about this have to choose the biology stream in their class 11. Then they would be able to do higher studies in this subject. It deals with plant species. One should have a strong interest in plant species to learn more about this topic.

For example, we can call the plants monocot only when they have a single cotyledon. Otherwise, they won’t come under the category of monocots. In Monocots, the plants will attain some certain height. The roots will differ when you compare them with some other plants. You can easily find if a plant is a monocot or not by seeing the veins of the leaves, which will be very different from dicots.

One of the easiest examples of monocots is rice. Rice is a food item that is mostly grown in tropical areas. The reason why monocots have single cotyledon is because of the embryo in the plant leaves. It is a part used for storing the food part. Monocots can be found mostly in the areas of streams, ponds, and lakes. It is very common in the villages than in cities because in villages the area will be full green so that plant species can be found in abundant numbers.

What are Dicots?

In dicots, the plants usually have two cotyledons. It is the short form used for pronouncing dicotyledons. Some of the examples of dicots are beans, apples, cauliflower, and pear. The angiosperms in the dicot will be divided into many categories. The other name used for angiosperm is the flowering plant. This name itself gives the typical meaning that they are in two.

Most flowering plants will only fall under the monocot’s category, and all the other fruits and vegetable species will fall under the dicot’s category. Even some flower species will fall under the dicot category, but that depends upon the type of plant species. Dicots plants are always in multiple numbers, and they form four or five leaves.

The roots and stems have a special feature called the cambium, which gives them strength and the ability to grow in diameter. They are the main reason for their height in diameter. We can easily identify the dicot leaf by taking a closer look at its ventilation part. You can even find their leaves to be big and broad when comparing them with other plant leaves. In dicot leaves, you can find the stomata only on the leaves part and not on any other areas. 

Main Differences Between Monocots and Dicots

  1. In monocots, the root system will be fibrous. On the other hand, in dicots, the root system will be tap root ones.
  2. When you take a close look at the stems of the monocots, you will be able to find that they are scattered. But on dicots, their stems will be even and not scattered.
  3. In Monocots, you cannot see any woods or bark as they won’t be able to produce that. But on dicots, you will be able to see them.
  4. The seeds in the monocots have only one, but on the dicot, they have two leaves.
  5. In monocots, you can see that the leaves have parallel venation. On the other hand, the leaves in the dicots have reticulate venation.
