Toaster Oven vs Convection Oven

The difference between Toaster Oven and Convection Oven is that while a toaster oven uses internal heating coils to cook food, a convection oven uses a built-in fan that evenly distributes the heat generated by the heating coils. It is the difference in their heating system that changes the taste of the food cooked.

Toaster Oven is an upgraded version of the regular toaster. Using a toaster oven one can now warm up food items that cannot fit into a toaster, such as a hot dog, cake, or burger. A toaster oven has heating coils positioned at the top or at the bottom, which generates heat to toast, broil, bake, defrost (frozen food items), and roast.

Convection Oven, though the same as a toaster oven in appearance, poses a complete contrast to it in terms of the heating system. A convection oven has heating coils that generate heat first, and then the in-built fans that are both at the top and bottom of the oven helps in distributing the hot air around the food to cook it evenly.

What is Toaster Oven?

Toaster Oven is similar to a regular toaster but with better features- it can be used to toast food items and much more. Be it broiling chicken pieces, or baking a cake, or even roasting vegetables, it is all possible with a toaster oven.

It uses internal heating coils that are placed either at the top of the appliance or at the bottom. Its high-quality heating system makes it a more valuable addition to one’s kitchen in comparison to a regular toaster that is limited to a single function.

If one is comfortable using a regular toaster, switching to a toaster oven shouldn’t be challenging at all. As there is only one set of internal heating coils, there is no need to adjust the temperature of the oven for cooking different meals, instead, all meals can be prepared at the same temperature.

A toaster oven is smaller in size; therefore, it is a viable option in kitchens of every size. Its compact size also allows it to be carried from one place to other with ease.

The toaster oven runs on electricity and not gas. This makes it much easier to be cleaned.

Toaster oven consumes a lot of energy. Since the distribution of heat isn’t even in a toaster oven, it takes a long while to cook a meal with it. To ensure that the food is desirably cooked, the toaster oven will have to be pre-heated depending on the nature of the item that is being prepared.

What is Convection Oven?

Convention Oven is bigger in size as it comes with two sets of built-in fans that are situated both at the top and bottom of the appliance, and aids in evenly distributing the heat around the oven that is generated by the internal heating coils.

It can be used to cook a plethora of food items, ranging from baking pastries to roasting a chicken.

Someone who has used a regular toaster until now will have to take a thorough look at the direction manual that comes along with the convection oven. The cooking temperature will have to be adjusted to a preferred degree depending on the food item that is being made. Due to its in-built fans, the heat distribution is even, thereby, enabling it to cook a meal evenly and faster.

A convection oven can work on electricity as well as gas. But using gas would mean that cleaning a convection oven could be a real task.

Since the distribution of hot air around the oven is even due to the two sets of built-in fans, it consumes lesser energy and does not have to be pre-heated for long.

Main Differences Between Toaster Oven and Convection Oven

  1. A toaster oven is smaller in size and its compactness makes it easier to carry it around. In contrast, a convection oven is bigger and is not easily portable.
  2. While a toaster oven has internal heating coils either at the top or at the bottom, a convection oven has internal heating coils that generate heat, and the built-in fans at the top and the bottom of the convection oven helps in the even distribution of the hot air.
  3. A toaster runs on electricity, whereas, a convection oven can run both on electricity and gas.
  4. The cooking time in a toaster oven is quite high. In contrast, the cooking time in a convection oven is less as the even distribution of the heat around the food prepares it faster.
  5. While the energy consumption in toaster oven is much high, it is significantly less in a convection oven.

Conclusion

Though toaster ovens and convection ovens look similar, they differ in the manner of their functioning. The primary differences between the two are concerning their sizes and their internal heating system. Both toaster oven and convection oven can be used to cook the same type of food items, however, the amount of energy consumed by a toaster oven will not be the same as a convection oven.
