Difference Between Trich and BV (With Table)

One out of two sexually active people will contract an STI by the age of 25, says a survey. The centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reckons that nearly 20 million new STIs occur every year, globally, which includes mostly young people aged between 15 to 24. One of the STDs is Trichomoniasis, which is commonly known as Trich.

Trich vs BV

The difference between Trichomoniasis (Trich) and Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is that though both of them are types of vaginitis but there symptoms and the cause of spread is different. The former is spread through sexual contact while the latter is spread because of the bacteria that is naturally found.

Trich is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) and is caused by a bacteria-containing protozoan parasite. As the symptoms of this infection are very rare, many of the infected persons do not realise that they are suffering from it.

Whereas in the case of Bacterial Vaginosis, 9 out of 10 women that we found to have Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) have reported no symptoms.

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV), is a commonly found infection among women aged between 15 to 44 years. Moreover, if it is not treated properly, it can lead to serious complications.

Parameters of ComparisonTrichBV
MeaningTrich or Trichomoniasis, is a physically transmitted infection found in women.Whereas, BV or Bacterial Vaginosis is an overgrowth of bacteria that is naturally developed.
Reason of spreadThe reason for the spread of Trich is physical relationship.BV is spread naturally by the overgrowth of bacteria found.
Complications/Risks involvedA premature delivery of a baby is counted as a risk involved for pregnant women. There are no such risks involved.
SymptomsTrich causes foul-smelling discharge and painful urination in women, on the other hand, men have no symptoms.BV may cause abnormal discharge, itchiness and odour.

What is Trich?

Trichomoniasis or Trich, is a commonly spread sexual transmitted infection, which means it is spread by sexual contact. Risk factors include having multiple sexual partners and not using protection during intercourse.

Trich is caused by the parasite that contains a protozoan parasite called Trichomonas. According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, 9 out of 10 infected people, fail to experience any symptoms and confuse it with infection.

It is a short term infection which is resolved within days or weeks, which causes foul-smelling discharge and painful urination in women, whereas men have no symptoms as such.

What is BV?

Bacterial Vaginosis (BV) is a type of vaginitis caused in females due to overgrowth of bacteria that has been naturally developed. It tends to affect women in a childbearing age, typically from 15 to 44 years of age.

BV is a short term infection that can be resolved within days or weeks, although it is found to be recurring within 3 to 12 months which requires additional treatment for the same. It causes abnormal discharge, itchiness, and odour. Moreover, sexual unprotected activities or frequent douching can increase the risk factor of bacterial vaginosis.

Although, BV does not cause any health problems but can decrease the fertility rate among women who are trying to get pregnant and may cause a few issues during delivery of a pregnant lady. Half of the women who are suffering from BV have no symptoms, however, they can include:

  1. Burning feel during urination.
  2. Itchiness
  3. Odour
  4. Fishy smell that increases after intercourse
  5. White, gray or green discharge

Main Differences Between Trich and BV

  1. Trich is a sexually transmitted disease, which means it is caused by unprotected sexual activities, having multiple partners, whereas, BV is caused due to overgrowth of bacteria naturally found.
  2. Trich affects only the female but both during treatment both the partners have to intake an oral medicine as prescribed , however, in the case of BV, it only occurs in women.
  3. Both Trich and BV is a short term infection that can be resolved within days or weeks. However, in the case of BV there are chances of recurrence of the infection within 3 to 12 months.
  4. BV affects women who are at childbearing age, that is, between 15 to 44 years, which is not the case with Trich.

Although both Trich and BV are types of vaginitis, they are totally different infections. The former is caused due to sexual unprotected activities while the latter is an overgrowth of bacteria naturally developed. Trich causes premature delivery of a pregnant woman while on the other hand, BV does not affect the health but may cause burning sensation during urinating, white, gray or green discharge, odour.

Both of them are short term infections, however, in the case of BV, it can reoccur within 3 to 12 months and is curable by medical experts. Trich as well as BV are commonly found infections in every 7 out of 10 people and sometimes, the infected people fail to experience any of the symptoms and consider them as some infection.
