Education plays an important role in the growth of an individual. It is a process of learning and acquiring knowledge, habits, beliefs, morals, and new skills. There are different ways in which students can be taught. Two of the most prominent ones are Inductive and Deductive Language Teaching and Learning.

The difference between Inductive Teaching and Learning, and Deductive Language Teaching and Learning is that Inductive Teaching and Learning is based on a student’s approach. Whereas, Deductive Language Teaching and Learning is based on a teacher’s approach. There are many other differences between the two, including the method used, flow of information.

Inductive Teaching and Learning is a form of teaching and learning in which students are given various tests or experiments to be conducted. And they learn on the basis of their observation made in the entire process. It involves experimentation, observation, and understanding of the concept by the student.

Deductive Language Teaching and Learning is a form of teaching and learning in which students are given secondary information. Here the students learn on the basis of the observation made in the past by someone else. It involves understanding the concept based on another individual’s study or experience.

What is Inductive Language Teaching and Learning?

Inductive Teaching and Learning is a way of teaching and learning in which there is the involvement of experimentation, observation and understanding of a particular concept by the students. The students learn from their experiences at their own pace. This can be explained with a few examples-

  1. For explaining the concept of evaporation, the teacher asks students to mix salt and a glass of water and keep it in the balcony or sunlight. The students do the same and observe that water slowly disappears, leaving behind the salt. 
  2. For teaching about crop cultivation- The teacher asks students to pot the seeds from a tomato in soil and water it daily. They get to observe how a plant grows from these seeds. And hence understand the concept. 

Here the students are given an opportunity to utilize their observing skills, knowledge, and self learn. This is just a small example. But inductive teaching and learning give abundant space for verification, exploration and innovation.

As this method involves a student’s approach, it is creative, imaginative and personalized. It motivates teachers and students to go beyond the set of rules and sometimes create new ones. The inductive method has proven to be more effective than the other methods.

What is Deductive Language Teaching and Learning?

Deductive Language Teaching and Learning is a way of teaching and learning in which there is the involvement of understanding of a particular concept based on a previous study. This is a traditional way of teaching and learning. The students learn with the help of notes prepared by the teacher. This can be explained with a few examples-

For teaching, explaining the concept of evaporation, or For teaching about crop cultivation. 

The teacher explains the concept through notes, diagrams, pictures and videos based on the given concepts. Or the teacher could ask the students to prepare their own research paper from different sources on the given topic. 

Here, the students need not conduct any experiment. It is also sometimes linked to mugging up. Deductive language teaching and learning is based on a teacher’s approach to various concepts. This method does not provide much space for the students to bring in creativity through new ideas or innovation.

Also, students are given less opportunity to fully utilize their skills for exploration. Because of which it is rigid and predictable. As it is based on given information and it is quicker. Due to this, it is suitable for teaching a large group of students at a time.

Main Differences Between Inductive and Deductive Language Teaching and Learning

  1. Inductive teaching and learning involve discovering new things by observation. Whereas a deductive method of teaching and learning involves observation of other discoveries.
  2. In Inductive teaching and learning, the flow of information is from specific to general. On the contrary, in Deductive Language Teaching and Learning, the flow of information is from general to specific.
  3. The Inductive method is the more versatile and the deductive method more traditional.
  4. Inductive teaching and learning are based on a student’s individual perspective. On the contrary, Deductive Language Teaching and Learning is based on a teacher’s or any other individual’s perspective.
  5. Inductive teaching and learning are more suitable for smaller groups. Whereas, Deductive Language Teaching and Learning is suitable for larger groups.

Conclusión 

Learning is a never-ending process. According to some, a person should always be willing to unlearn, learn and relearn things from time to time. It is important for every individual to make sure he continues learning. And it is the responsibility of every teacher to make sure they teach correct things in an understandable way. Both inductive and deductive language teaching and learning are adopted in institutions all over the world. As a coin has two sides, they both have their own advantages and disadvantages.
