Difference Between SSD and NVMe (With Table)

Storage devices in a computer are very important. They keep a record of the media that is present in the device as well as store digital data. It is integrated within the hardware of the computer. Without storage, the normal functioning of a computer would be impossible.

Solid state drives are non-volatile storage devices that use flash-memory to store persistent data. They were invented before NVMe. NVMe is a software interface used to access the stored data in a computer. SSDs are a part of hardware while NVMe is a software that can be installed into the computer.

A diferença entre SSD and NVMe is that SSD stores data by using integrated circuits while NVMe is an interface used to access the stored data at a high speed. NVMe is far advanced than SSD and hence is faster and better criptografado than the latter. But it does not mean that NVMe is flawless and does have any drawbacks.

O que é SSD?

A solid state drive was first introduced by SanDisk. It can be called a solid state device or a solid state disk. When it was first introduced in 1991, it could only store up to 20 MB of data. Nowadays these drives can store around 60-100 TB of data.

These drives cannot be easily physically damaged and are more resistant to shock. Their access time is quick and they do not require spinning of the disk to run. The performance of different drives can vary according to the number of bits present in one cell. Single cell drives are the fastest and most durable among them, they are also more economical.

Early SSDs used the technology of RAM, but this could not persist as although they were fast, they lost data as soon as the power ran out. This caused the loss of data. Hence a more reliable technology had to be found and it was flash memory. The data when stored in flash memory of the solid state drive, was not lost as the power ran out, but actually stored inside the device.

What is NVMe?

The first NVMe interface was developed by NVM express. It was started ten years ago in 2011. The urge to develop the interface came after people experienced some drawbacks with solid state drives. Similarly to SSDs, the NVMe has to be physically inserted with the storage media.

While SSDs can only carry out one inquerir or command at a time, it is not the case of NVMe. They can bring results of multiple queries and commands. This also reduces the latency, and there is minimum delay when fetching the results. They come in the form of 2.5 inch cards that fit into the storage system of the computer.

The first stepping stone for accessing the non-volatile memory emerged at the Intel Developer Forum in 2007. It was completed by 2008 and released on Intel’s website. More than 90 companies participated in making the specifications of the NVMe. Integrated Device Technology made the NVMe commercially available to people in the month of August in 2012.

Main Differences Between SSD and NVMe

  1. SSD is an abbreviation of solid storage device while NVMe is an abbreviation for non-volatile memory express.
  2. SSD is a secondary storage device that uses integrated circuits to complete its work while NVMe is an interface that is used to access the stored data.
  3. NVMe is much faster than an SSD.
  4. Solid state devices require less power to function than NVMe does.
  5. NVMe is much more expensive than solid state devices.
  6. SSDs can be connected to any device easily but it is not the same for NVMe.
  7. NVMe is better encrypted than SSDs.

Storage devices are of no use if there is no way to access the data, this is where NVMe comes in. It is a fast and efficient software which reads the data at the speed of 3 GB per second. It is four times faster than the fastest SAS (Statistical Software Suite). It can deliver results at the speed of 2000 MB pers second.

Solid state drives are much slower to access and deliver results at the speed of 600 MB per second. In comparison to NVMe, it gives you more room for storage at a lesser price. SSDs can be connected to any devices easily and are compatible with them. They are also more power efficient than NVMe and can run on low power.

Both SSDs and NVMe are great to use and have their advantages as well as their disadvantages. By weighing their specifications against your needs, you can select the perfect fit for you.
