There are several multimedia platforms available today. Shockwave and Flash are two such platforms launched by Adobe. The original creator of both Shockwave and Flash is Macromedia.

Nonetheless, ever since their launch, Adobe Shockwave and Flash have performed different functions and possess varying features and tools.

The main difference between Shockwave and Flash is that while Shockwave demands more technical and advanced scripting knowledge, users believe that Flash is relatively more convenient and easier to use. In addition, Flash allows for more personalizations since it is an open-source platform. Shockwave, on the other hand, may require a user to take coaching classes to learn its complex functioning.

Shockwave has a fast rendering engine and hardware-accelerated 3D. The functionality of Shockwave can be expanded with the use of extensions called Xtras.

However, Shockwave plugins are limited to only Windows and Mac OS.

While the initial purpose of Shockwave was to add animations and make online movies, it has become relatively more popular for game development.

Shockwave also has a practical application for online learning tools that usually relate to real-world physics. The former names of Adobe Shockwave were Macromedia Shockwave and Macromind Shockwave. 

Shockwave usually attracts limited installations. Only half of the computer systems have Adobe Shockwave due to its connection limitations.

Nonetheless, Adobe Shockwave serves purposes like business presentations, entertainment, and advertisements.

However, Adobe announced the discontinuation of the Shockwave in 2017. Additionally, Creative Cloud was suggested as the best replacement for Adobe Shockwave.  

What is Flash?

Flash is a multimedia platform and software launched by Adobe. The main purpose of Adobe flash is to create vector graphics, Rich Internet Applications, and games.

Another function of flash is to add streamed audio or video content and multimedia content to web pages. In addition, flash allows for bidirectional streaming of audio and video content. 

The methods of data input into flash are keyboard, camera, mouse, and microphone. Flash allows for automation using JavaScript Flash Language.

The initial objective of Flash was to create fully interactive websites. However, this objective has discontinued the introduction of HTML5.

Rather, Flash served as a dominant multimedia platform, particularly for browser games. 

When Flash came into the market, it was installed on desktop computers to play games and audio or video content. Furthermore, Flash video games had an impressive online market.

Some of the games created in association with Flash were angry birds, Clash of Clans, Hundreds, and Bubble Shooter. Adobe Flash was also used for popular animations like Littlest Pet Shop and Pound Puppies. 

However, there are some drawbacks to Adobe Flash. Firstly, modern mobile devices are incompatible with Flash. Secondly, Flash is seen as a security threat due to speculations around its public specifications.

Thirdly, flash cookies, just like HTTP cookies, often tend to trap consumer information without their knowledge. At present, Adobe Flash has been discontinued all across the globe except in China.

Main Differences Between Shockwave and Flash 

  1. While Shockwave plays a dominant role in online game development, Flash provides access to online audio and video content. 
  2. Shockwave is a less widely popular multimedia platform as compared to Adobe Flash.

To make content on a website, Flash is an ideal option. An advantage of Flash is the availability of plugins in almost every operating system.

Furthermore, Flash offers streamed audio or video content and multimedia content to web pages. To conclude, Shockwave and flash have several differences.
