Instead of still images, this telecommunication equipment displayed black and white moving pictures for the first time after the second world war by Philo Farnsworth in 1927. It was the primary source of advertising and news at the time.

There are two forms of television: analog and digital. Analog televisions are the oldest, or we can say that they were the first to be invented, in which analog signals are present to display audio or video.

On the contrary, digital television is the latest invention in which digital signals are there to display media on the screen.

Analog vs Digital TV

The difference between analog and digital TV is that analog TV depends on analog signals (a continuous form of signals). On the other hand, digital TV operates on digital signals (discrete values consisting of 0 and 1). The problem with the analog signal is unwanted interference and noise in the middle of the video.

Analog vs Digital TV

Analog TV or television consists of continuous signals or analog signals to show videos. These signals are based on sine waves and operate on the frequency.

One can take a wired connection (cable) or an unwired connection (satellite). Due to the continuous transfer of signals, media (audio and video) quality is degraded.

The signals used in digital television are digital signals (which use 0 or 1 bits to display media). These signals are known as square waves, and they are very accurate as compared to analog signals.

The aspect ratio of a digital TV screen is 16:9. That is four times vertically and three times horizontally.

What is Analog TV?

TV that came into existence after the second world war were analog ones because the signals embedded in that were analog signals which are in continuous form. Audio and video disturbances usually occur because of the continuity of the signals.

Screens were CRT (cathode ray tube) during the introduction of Analog TV, and the method used to display media was firing electrons on the device. After that, electrons reached the phosphors, which assisted in media presentation on the screen.

SD is the format in which we watch media on an analog television. It means analog TVs have smaller screens than digital TVs. Therefore, media quality is poor, and even such videos appear blurry when viewed on large screens.

Analog televisions use a bandwidth compression technique, which implies that the signal’s bandwidth is compressed without affecting how the data appears on the screen.

There was a need for this approach for two reasons: analog signals had lower bandwidth and to display movies without any data loss.

At first, the media was only available in black and white. Later inventions, however, allowed for the projection of colorful videos and movies on television, using the primary hues of red, green, and blue (RGB). On these televisions, each color required 8 bits.

What is Digital TV?

Woo Paik invented digital television in the early 1990s. The biggest issue that scientists faced throughout the development of the device was bandwidth. These televisions use digital signals that take one value at a time and are not in continuous mode.

Information received on the screen is in the form of binary bits (0 and 1). As a result, there is no external noise when displaying music and video on the screen.

These signals rely on square waves. Digital televisions have a higher resolution than regular televisions. So, all of the media on the screen is in high definition.

Digital televisions have a larger screen than analog televisions, with a 16:9 aspect ratio (four times vertically and three times horizontally). The average screen size is 50-60 inches, and the picture quality is outstanding, putting less strain on the eyes.

Along with the display, it has the best audio quality. You can connect this television(smart television) with the internet. On digital TVs, you can access basic Android apps (YouTube, Google, Amazon Prime, Netflix, and so on).

These are color televisions with LED (light-emitting diode) or LCD (liquid crystal display) panels which are thinner than CRT screens. Hence, investing in these televisions is a win-win deal with advanced technology.

Main Differences Between Analog and Digital TV

  1. Analog television is the oldest type of television. On the other hand, digital television is the most recent innovation in the telecommunications industry.
  2. Analog television consists of continuous analog signals. However, digital TV consists of digital signals (discrete form).
  3. Sine waves are used in analog television, while square waves are used in digital television.
  4. The screen size is small (30 inches) since the media presented on it is of standard definition. On the other hand, digital television supports high-definition television and screens that are greater in size (60 inches).
  5. Analog television can show both black-and-white and color footage. On the contrary, digital television shows colored media.
