Upon receiving the news that Mary was with child and the child was not his own, Joseph has doubts about his decision for the future.
But through this doubt, God has already created a plan for both of them.
The Bible Story: Matthew 1:18-25
“This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
Because Joseph her husband was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.
But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, ‘Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.
She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus because he will save his people from their sins.’
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel’ – which means, ‘God with us.’
When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife.
But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.”
The History
Like many of us even today, when Joseph heard the news that his soon-to-be wife was pregnant by the Holy Spirit, he immediately had his doubts.
He suspected that his fiancee had been unfaithful.
Although they were not yet married, in that time period, engagement was still considered to be a binding relationship that could only be broken through the proper channels of divorce.
In many cases, being unfaithful to your spouse was punishable by the death penalty.
Joseph was a kind man and did not want to bring any harm or ruin to Mary, so he made his own plans to privately divorce her and end their engagement in that manner.
In order to avoid a divorce in the Jewish court system, they needed two witnesses and they could be informally granted the right to divorce from one another.
However, later that night, an angel came to Joseph in a dream and told him the truth that Mary really had conceived a baby through the power of the Holy Spirit and that he could put his trust in Mary without the worry of the future.
In this same dream, the angel told Joseph that the baby would be called Jesus.
Although the Bible story does not name the angel, it may very well be Gabriel, God’s head messenger and the same angel who visited Mary to tell her that she would conceive a holy child.
Joseph knew that this vision of an angel in his dream was a sign from God, and thus, he put his faith in God and his trust in Mary.
