Many of us must have seen animated movies and serials in our childhood or even in adulthood as well. From Tom and Jerry to attack titan, people have different preferences when it comes to these types of entertainment.
But it is not just our preference that makes them a different thing but their inner attributes too. Apart from what we believe them to be, they have their own distinguished characteristics and differences.
Such two types of visual arts are Anime and Cartoons. While many people use these terms interchangeably and confuse them, they are a whole lot of different things.
To understand them up to their full extent, it is important to know how these two differ from each other and what makes them so different yet entertaining.

Anime vs Cartoon
Anime is a style of animation that originated in Japan and is characterized by its colorful artwork, fantastical themes, and vibrant characters. Cartoons, while also a form of animation, refer to Western-style animated shows or films characterized by humour and exaggerated characters.
Anime is nothing but animation which belongs to the Japanese people. It has its own boundaries and limitations added to the internal and external characteristics that belong to characters.
Many mainstream dictionaries suggest it to be a form of visual art that originated from Japan. But today, it has become a genre of itself and has grasped the world very quickly and effectively.
While Cartoon, on the other hand, is another form of visual art and can be in the form of a painting, drawing, or a mere sketch. The basic purpose behind it happens to bring smiles or satire out there in the mind of viewers.
These are widely popular among children as well as in the newspapers, books, or magazines, as they happen to be a very light weighted but impressive way of expressing one’s opinions or beliefs.

Originating from the French word dessin anime, Anime is said to be those animated movies or media that are produced and made in Japan primarily.
If an average person is asked about these terms, the very common response shall be this only as Anime and Japan are two very co-understood terms.
It was in the year 1980 that this form of visual art came into the limelight in from of the whole world. Snow White and Seven Dwarfs are the two such movies entailing this particular art which were first premiered outside Japan.
This art is presumed to be inspired by and taken from Manga which is a very popular book among Japanese people.
A very distinguishing feature that differentiates this art from other arts is that it denotes serious issues and portrays serious and complex ideas by way of entertainment.
These issues can be related to humans, health, the environment, etc. Originating from Japan, now it has widened its feet in countries like the United States, etc.
What is Cartoon?
A Cartoon is a word in the English language and refers to a form of visual art that denotes certain unrealistic or semi-realistic forms of animation. This word is derived from two words that are Cartone (Italian) and Karton (Dutch).
These words refer to heavy paper or cardboard.
Unlike Anime, it denotes issues that are of a less serious nature and is meant to make people smile by offering them humour or satire. This form of art originated from the United States primarily and is now produced worldwide in almost all the major countries.
It was first seen in the Middle age itself in the form of two-dimensional drawings and sketches. Cartoons are not only meant to be seen on television or electronic media but in print media as well.
There are many cartoonists who draw cartoons in newspapers, magazines, etc.
Main Differences Between Anime and Cartoon
