Difference Between Strong AI and Weak AI

Artificial intelligence is the basis of computer learning. It is the future of independent decision-making in complex situations. Most of the automated processes are built from artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence can be further divided into two main types. They are – Strong AI and Weak AI.

Strong AI vs Weak AI

The main difference between strong AI and weak AI is that strong AI is the future of artificial intelligence while weak AI is the present form of artificial intelligence. Strong AI can tackle a diverse range of problems and develop new approaches to solve the task while Weak AI can only accomplish specific problem reasoning and solving tasks.

Strong AI and Weak AI

Strong AI can be in the form of a machine that is built like a man and has a similar sensory perception as the human. The machines and programs have a mind of their own which helps them to think and accomplish complicated tasks without the interference of humans.

On the other hand, Weak AI Is in the form of a machine that is built with pre-designed and pre-determined responses and answers. Any question or problem that is presented before a Weak AI is supported by an answer from the predetermined sets. Weak AI has wide applications in various devices.

Comparison Table Between Strong AI and Weak AI

Parameters of Comparison Strong AIWeak AI
Intelligence abilities Strong AI have their mind and exhibit abilities of human cognitive Weak AI do not have their mind and have no provision for human cognitive abilities
TypeStrong AI is the future of artificial intelligence Weak AI is the present form of artificial intelligence
GoalTo develop innovative approaches for every task or problem through artificial intelligenceTo solve problems and tasks at a faster pace and accomplish the particular task
Application Still not applied Voice-based personal assistance models like Siri or Alexa
Maximum level The maximum level of strong AI is to match true human intelligence The maximum level of weak AI is to provide solutions within the predefined responses

What is Strong AI?

Strong AI refers to a particular type of mindset of the development of artificial intelligence. The goal of strong AI is to develop artificial to a level where the intellectual capability of a machine is equally functional to the intellectual capability of a human.

Strong AI can be in the form of a machine that is built like a man and has a similar sensory perception as the human. A Strong AI machine can even go through a similar learning and education process like a human child. It would not be born as a child but developed in an analogous way of human development. The approach of Strong AI is similar to creating human intelligence in computers.

Strong AI can have the ability to interact with the surrounding environment and even have the potential to learn from the interaction. It can develop common sense and language after some time. These programs have a mind of their own which helps them to think and accomplish complicated tasks without the interference of humans. The immediate application of applied AI overshadows the development of Strong AI.

The progression of the development in embedded systems is not satisfactory even in the basic construction. The algorithm of Strong AI is complex that enables systems to act in various situations and form independent decisions. Strong AI is also referred to as a theoretical form of machine intelligence. The main idea which is supported by strong eyes is that machines can develop human consciousness up to the level of human beings.

What is Weak AI?

Weak AI is also referred to as the narrow a full stop the functionality of Weak AI is limited and restricted. Weak AI includes advanced algorithms which help the program or machine to accomplish particular problem reasoning or solving tasks. It does not encompass the ranges of human cognitive abilities.

Some Weak AI applications that are used daily include Alexa and Siri. This voice-based personal assistance operates within a specific predefined set of functions. They have a response that is programmed. Any decision-making outside their programming cannot be completed or performed by them. There is no scope for reprogramming on learning from the surrounding environment.

The results or outcomes of Weak AI are not quite interesting. The building of Weak AI includes intelligent behavior that can be modeled by programs or machines to solve specific tasks. Weak AI can behave intelligently but interrogate a smarter approach is like a human. There is no provision of interacting with the surrounding in Weak AI.

Weak AI cannot achieve self-awareness or consciousness like a human being. There is no provision for demonstration of human cognitive abilities. They are intelligent but have a boundary. They cannot cross the boundary and think and make independent decisions. They are built from a human mind but cannot function as a human mind.

Main Differences Between Strong AI and Weak AI

  1. Strong AI is a hypothetical and theoretical form of artificial intelligence while Weak AI is a practical form of artificial intelligence.
  2. Strong AI functions on human cognitive abilities while Weak AI does not function on human cognitive abilities.
  3. Strong AI does not have any pre-programmed, pre-determined structure and responses while Weak AI has pre-programmed and pre-defined structure and responses.
  4. Strong AI can tackle a diverse range of problems and develop new approaches to solve the task while Weak AI can only accomplish specific problem reasoning and solving tasks.
  5. Strong AI includes machines that are self-aware and conscious while Weak AI includes machines that are neither self-aware nor conscious.

Conclusion

Artificial intelligence helps in the execution of daily tasks. The end goal of using artificial intelligence for any process is to increase the efficiency and productivity of the target area. The workflows are improved and the error rates are minimized significantly.

Artificial intelligence is classified into Strong AI and Weak AI. Both types of artificial intelligence are different from each other. Their origin and application at different. However, the end goal of both types is to help in decision-making and improve efficiency.
