Difference Between Tux and Suit

Tux or Tuxedo is a dress code for a social evening event. Its custom color is either black or dark blue.

It is characterized by having a grosgrain or satin facings on the lapels.

The complete Tuxedo suit comprises of a jacket and dark trousers. And it features silk stripes down the sides, a bow tie, and cummerbund.

On some occasions, tuxedos have a silk stripe down the side other times it doesn’t have. No belt should be worn when wearing a tuxedo.

Suspenders can be worn or if you want you can go for pants with side-adjusters.

Main Differences Between Tux and Suit

Components and Accessories

Suits are available in a variety of components basing on the design, cut, cloth-like two or three pieces. Suits match well a necktie and collared shirts.

They are available in three ways.

Ready to wear – they are available in the cloth stores

Bespoke – they are made from the customer’s measurements and pattern

Made to measure – a pre-made pattern is modified to fit the customer. They have limited selection options.

Tuxedos consist of a silk jacket. They have satin covering on the top part of each side of the jacket.

The trousers of tuxedos have silk thread that resembles each side of the jacket, cummerbund or low cut waistcoat in black.

Style and Stitching

Tuxedo has three different lapels’ distinctive appearance. They are the notched, shawl, and peak.

The notched lapel has a V notch and the peak lapel has an upward shaped v mark. The shawl has no cut and is bent.

Tuxedos pants do not feature belt loops and cuffs

Suits have a self front on each part of the coat that matches the material of the suit. The lapel on the suits is similar to the notched lapel of the tuxedo.

Suits have two to four buttons that are made from any material. Still, the buttons on suits are not covered.  


On average a quality suit will cost approximately $300 and above. The price excludes a shirt, tie, and shoes.

A tuxedo cost about $700 and above for the jacket and pants. The bottom line, a tuxedo is expensive than a suit.


Tuxedos has a limited color palette. The jacket pockets have no flaps.

The trousers have no pleats or cuffs. The single-breasted models have one button.

Suits, depending on the image they are trying to project are less fixed. Suits look neat, tidy, and handsome.

It is important you know the difference between a suit and tuxedo because at one point may be required to wear a tuxedo. Every time you wear either a suit or tuxedo, ensure you dress suitably.

You can compromise on the fabric if the suit fits well. A suit that fits well but made from low-quality material is better than that made from high-quality and ill-fitting.

A tuxedo has not just to fit but should also be made from high-quality material. The pants are not to bear belt loops because of the expectation of wearing suspenders.
