What is FBI?

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is responsible for enforcing federal law and investigating a wide range of crimes, including terrorism, cybercrime, white-collar crime, public corruption, civil rights abuses, and other significant offences. The Department of Justice of the United States of America is responsible for overseeing the FBI. The FBI is major counter-terrorism, counter-intelligence, and criminal investigation agency in the United States, with authority over more than 200 federal crime categories.

The Bureau of Investigation, often known as the BOI or BI, was founded in 1908. The J. Edgar Hoover Building in Washington, D.C., serves as the FBI’s headquarters. The BOI was connected to the Bureau of Prohibition the next year, 1933, and renamed the Division of Investigation (DOI); in 1935, it became a separate organization under the Department of Justice. The name of the agency was changed from the Division of Investigation to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in the same year (FBI).

Despite its domestic focus, the FBI maintains a significant overseas presence, with 60 Legal Attache (LEGAT) operations and 15 sub-offices in US embassies around the world all over the world. In most cases, these foreign offices are employed to collaborate with other countries’ security services and do not engage in any unilateral actions within the host countries. FBI agents are given more importance when it comes to complex cases.

The FBI was created to combat communism, whereas the CBI was created to combat corruption. Wiretapping and internet surveillance are lawful activities for the FBI. The FBI was subsequently given more power by the Intelligence Authorization Act of 2004, which allowed it unprecedented ability to seize data from financial institutions without a court order. However, in our case, granting the CBI such jurisdiction may not be desirable. Both these Investigation Bureaus are formed for high-level crime-solving.
