Difference Between Pride and Self Esteem

The terms Pride and Self Esteem sound quite similar and are considered similar by a maximum of the population, but the two terms are different from each other. Pride is high self-worth for oneself, whereas self-esteem is defined as a stable level of self-worth.

The main difference between Pride and Self Esteem is that pride is excessive self-worth for oneself, whereas the term self-esteem is self-worth for oneself but in a very stable and positive manner. Pride exaggerates your abilities, whereas self-esteem makes you feel worthy of your abilities. The two terms differ from each other.  

Pride vs Self Esteem

Pride is a term of psychological trait that every human being expresses. Pride is defined as a trait under which a person is considered to have a high level of self-worth for himself.

Under pride, we consider our abilities to be the best over everybody else. Pride lets us make decisions that are not healthy for us.  

Self-Esteem can be defined as the psychological trait under which we have a stable level of self-worth. Self Esteem never makes us feel overconfident of one’s abilities.

It gives us satisfaction without comparing with others. We always make positive decisions in self-esteem because we are in a stable state of mind when we feel self-esteem in ourselves.

What is Pride?

The term pride can be described as a trait of extreme self-worth in which we have high regard for our abilities over others. It’s a psychological trait in which we consider ourselves superior to others.  

Pride is usually considered a negative aspect because pride leads to things that are not healthy. Pride generates traits like overconfidence, ego, attitude, etc., in a person, and these traits are harmful to a person’s personality.  

Pride always leads to making yourself the best without even considering others. It does not let you help people because of the trait to keep yourself first. Pride is always the pleasure of supremacy.  

Pride is always competitive. We always compete to prove ourselves right in pride. It will always lead to comparison because it always wants extreme satisfaction to the soul of being the best.  

Pride is an unnecessary overestimation of the capabilities we possess. It leads to raising yourself to a point which is considered the best.  

A person in pride will never accept the mistake if somebody corrects them. They make decisions for themselves without discussing considering themselves superior to others.

Pride usually does not consider others for help because of the supremacy it possesses.  

What is Self-Esteem?  

Self Esteem can be defined as the recognition an individual possesses for himself. It can be described as the evaluation of the skills we possess.

Since it’s based on evaluation, people may either possess low or high self-esteem based on evaluation of the abilities.  

Self Esteem is a positive psychological trait. Self Esteem leads us to possess positive traits like helping others, making collective decisions, praising others for their achievements, learning from others, etc.  

Self Esteem always leads to stable self-esteem for one’s abilities and achievements. It does not lead to overconfidence. It makes you feel satisfied with your achievements without comparing them to others.  

A person with self-esteem will never judge others on their failures but will help them fight that situation. Self-esteem understands without being judgemental. It leads you to learn from your mistakes without being upset about your failure.  

Some features that a person with self-esteem will possess are taking directions, understanding, being a good learner, being grateful, etc. It is considered as a personal trait of being satisfied with oneself.  

Self-esteem describes what we think about ourselves. It is not based on the evaluation of others. It’s a self-evaluation of one’s strengths and weaknesses and learning from them. Self-esteem also helps you in being sociable.  

Main Differences Between Pride and Self Esteem  

  1. The term pride is a high level of self-worth in one’s capabilities, whereas the term self-esteem is a balanced level of self-worth in oneself.  
  2. Pride is usually considered as a negative behavioural trait, whereas Self-esteem is a positive personal trait in one’s behaviour. 
  3. Under pride, we compare ourselves with others to be happy and being superior gives happiness, whereas, under self-esteem, we don’t compare ourselves because the stable self-worth of abilities gives us happiness.  
  4. Overconfidence is considered as a stem of pride, whereas overconfidence is not a constituent of self-esteem.  
  5. A person in pride is never satisfied with success. Pride always craves for more, whereas a person having self-esteem is satisfied with what he has and learns from the mistakes made.  
  6. A person with pride is less sociable, whereas a person with self-esteem is friendly and is more sociable.  
  7. A person with pride is not expressive, whereas a person with self-esteem is expressive and a good communicator.  
Difference Between Pride and Self Esteem


Pride and Self-esteem are behavioural traits a person possesses. The two terms are often confused being similar, but the difference between the two exists in terms of the level of self-worth one has for one’s capabilities.  

The line which exists between the two is because of the regard we express towards our achievements. Both the terms somewhere inbuilt a level of confidence in the people, which is a necessity in today’s life.

Having too much pride may become a harmful trait in the person in the long run. A person having self-esteem may or may not have pride, but a person having pride always possess some level of high self-esteem.
